SEGA Genesis NOMAD

July 1, 2009 - 10:04 pm - Posted by Sean R.

Picked up this classic SEGA GENESIS NOMAD at a local Goodwill for $29.99 USD:

The thing is a huge brick, but it works nicely. The game cartridge I’m showing in the video is the GENESIS 6-PAK that contains the following classic games:

Apparently the SEGA Genesis NOMAD is really rare. I’ve seen them go for $25.00 USD to over $100.00 USD on eBay, so who really knows?

Anyway, it does have a TV out and a second controller (Player 2) port, but if you plan on connecting it to a TV, why not just use a normal SEGA Genesis?

Atari 2600: Seaquest

June 28, 2009 - 11:18 am - Posted by Sean R.

Yet another expertly-programmed Activision game, Seaquest is a sight to behold. The bright blue water, red sunset, and crisp graphics are incredibly inviting.

Atari 2600 Seaquest

The game offers some engaging, yet repetitive, rapid-fire submarine action. Manning a yellow sub, you must rescue lost divers being chased by sharks.

The blue divers look funny as they kick frantically with jaw-snapping sharks on their heels. You’ll also have to contend with gray submarines that fire torpedoes.

Your sub can carry up five divers at a time, and considering they are nearly as large as your sub, you wonder how they can all fit in the thing! It’s like the clown car of the ocean!

Your oxygen is limited, but that’s rarely a factor. What is a factor is the small, unassuming ship patrolling above. He looks friendly enough, but that son of a [expletive] will try to ram your ass when you surface! Bastard!!

I love Seaquest’s bright visuals and crisp controls, but its gameplay gets old in a hurry, and not necessarily due to the difficulty level. Basically it’s the extra ships you get at every 10K that water down the challenge and drag things out.

Still, Seaquest by Activision is an appealing title that gets by mainly on the strength of its good looks.

1984-85 Nintendo NES In-Store Game Kiosk

June 17, 2009 - 2:59 pm - Posted by Sean R.

An eBay seller says this is a kiosk that was used in stores to sell the Nintendo Entertainment System games back in the day:

Apparently this Kiosk has two NES controllers, a Grey Zapper Light Gun and is loaded with the following 16 classic NES games:

Tennis, Baseball, Soccer, 10-Yard Fight, Golf, Wild Gunman, Hogan’s Alley, Duck Hunt, Wrecking Crew, Excitebike, Kung Fu, Super Mario Bros., Ice Climber, Pinball, Clu-Clu Land, Stack-Up

I already own the actual cartridges for the games on this NES Kiosk, but man, if I had an extra $499.00 USD laying around, I’d probably bid on this auction.

Check out the details on the eBay auction listing.

Atari 2600 Cartridge Remade Into Wallet

June 14, 2009 - 11:12 am - Posted by Sean R.

It is $55.00 USD, however, the maker of this fine conversation piece says all of an Atari 2600 cartridge’s parts, except for one screw, are re-purposed to help make it into a wallet.

The maker, Nilesz, is running a win-a-wallet contest over on his site, which of course gives you the info on how to order one.

From his blog, it sounds like he does take mail-in requests, but you need to make sure you’re sending him something usable first.

It’d be geektastic if he could do the old Imagic cases, but the 14 he does offer – including Haunted House, Circus Atari and everyone’s favorite, E.T. – are slick enough.

Conan Addresses Super Mario Backdrop

June 5, 2009 - 11:47 pm - Posted by Sean R.

You might have heard earlier this week how a website was claiming that Conan O’Brien’s new set looked suspiciously like a Super Mario Bros. level.

Well, tonight on his show Conan addressed the accusations, saying that:

“it’s absurd — there’s no way that you could ever see Super Mario Bros. in this set.”

And then he delivered the punchline, which you can see in this clip:

Anyway, it seems like Conan staged the entire thing, but either way, it’s pretty funny — and a really cool homage to the Nintendo game.

Google Celebrates Tetris Birthday

June 5, 2009 - 10:28 pm - Posted by Sean R.

So I was just about to search for something on Google and noticed that the search engine changed its logo — to a Tetris theme!

Google Tetris

Why? To celebrate the iconic videogame’s birthday. It was 25 years ago today (well tomorrow June 6) that Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris.

Over the past 25 years Tetris has sold over 70 million copies, and we named it the #1 game of all time in our Top 100 Games of All Time feature in EGM.

So happy birthday, Tetris. I really hope Alexey is out celebrating right now. Be sure to join the party and play a few round of Tetris in our game room.
