Atari 2600: Berzerk Voice-Enhanced (VE)

September 25th, 2008 by Sean

If you’ve only played Berzerk on the Atari 2600, you may be unaware that the real magic behind the original arcade game was its awesome voice synthesis.

Its robotic voice would say things like “Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!”, “Humanoid must not escape”, and my personal favorite, “Chicken, fight like a robot!”

Keep in mind that the original Atari 2600 release of Berzerk didn’t have the voice synthesis or the proper color scheme.

Now you can experience the same voice-equipped arcade action thanks to a homebrew hack making this Atari classic voice-enhanced (VE). Read the rest of this entry…

Atari 2600: Atlantis

September 22nd, 2008 by Sean

Thanks to its attractive, high-resolution graphics, Atlantis by Imagic won over a lot of gamers in 1982.

The bottom half of the screen features a colorful, submerged city with all sorts of strange-looking buildings and reactors.

Overhead, rainbow-colored hostile alien ships zip back and forth until they descend low enough to disintegrate one of the structures.

Using three cannons, one in the middle and one on each side, it’s your job to keep these invaders at bay for as long as possible.

Since you can’t aim, the gameplay is remarkably simple – just select your cannon with the joystick and fire. Read the rest of this entry…

Atari 2600: Breakout

September 14th, 2008 by Sean

With the exception of Pong, it doesn’t get much more basic than Breakout for the Atari 2600.

Using a paddle controller, you repeatedly defect a ball against a wall of colored bricks, chipping away until they’re all gone.

The strategy is always the same – create an opening on the far left, right side or middle if you’re feeling adventurous so the ball becomes trapped in the hollow top area.

When this occurs, it tends to bounce around like crazy, doing most of your work for you. Consequentially your ball moves faster and your paddle experiences shrinkage. Read the rest of this entry…

Atari 2600: Wizard of Wor

August 20th, 2008 by Sean

Say what you want about the flickering graphics and the blocky, goofy-looking monsters, Wizard of Wor delivers some serious maze-shooting action. You can even play simultaneously with a friend!

Wizard Of Wor Cartridge With Manual

The object is to exterminate all the monsters in each dungeon. The maze changes in terms of layout and color as you progress, and a scanner on the bottom of the screen helps you track invisible monsters!

There can be up to six creatures crawling around the dungeon at a time and some can even shoot at you! There are two escape doors on either side of the screen, like Pac-Man.

Atari 2600 Wizard Of Wor

After clearing out the normal monsters, a winged beast called a “Worluk” flies towards an escape door, and you can blast him for bonus points.

Next you engage the Wizard of Wor himself. This guy teleports all over the place, usually vanishing before you get a chance to pump lead into him.

Sometimes it takes a lucky shot to nail him, so keep shooting. Wizard of Wor plays much better than it looks.

For best results, set the difficulty to A, and don’t forget to use the right joystick for the single-player game.
