Sega Genesis: Cool Spot
March 9th, 2009 by Sean R.
Cool Spot for the Sega Genesis stars the “red dot” with sunglasses who was formerly the 7-Up mascot.

Despite being essentially an interactive soft drink commercial, this game is irresistibly fun.
Each stage challenges you to collect suspended red dots while avoiding or shooting marine creatures and bugs.
Spot walks slowly but can leap a great distance, and I love his ability to shoot bubbles rapid-fire in all directions. Read the rest of this entry…
NES: Slalom
February 27th, 2009 by Sean R.
I’m a big fan of snow games, and Slalom designed by Rare has a cheerful winter vibe that’s appealing.

You select between three mountains of increasing difficulty, each offering a series of eight trails to conquer.
You’re racing the clock, and to reach the finish line in time you’ll need to ski through gates and avoid a myriad of obstacles like snowmen, pine trees, and kids on sleds.
It feels like an obstacle course, but the handy jump button lets you soar right over many of the hazards.
Racing against the clock is fun, and a handy icon moves across the top of the screen so you can easily tell how close you are to the finish. Read the rest of this entry…
Turbo Grafx 16: Final Lap Twin
February 24th, 2009 by Sean R.
Wow – could NEC come up with a more awkward-sounding title? This racer is basically Pole Position on a split-screen. I thought that sounded like a good idea, but after playing Final Lap Twin, I’m not so sure.

The graphics are exactly like Pole Position, but the gameplay is far more forgiving. Instead of crashing into other cars, you just bump against them. The only thing you need to really worry about is hitting signs on the side of the road.
While certainly easy to play, Final Lap Twin lacks tension and drama, especially when it comes to “threading the needle” between cars. Racing against a friend is mildly amusing, but playing solo isn’t much fun at all.

The AI absolutely stinks, with your opponent constantly hounding you no matter how well you race. I wouldn’t normally hold graphics against a game of this nature, but I couldn’t help but notice how dull and unimaginative the backgrounds look. Even the original Pole Position had better scenery!
The one highlight of the game is its RPG-style “quest mode”, where you gradually earn money to upgrade your car while racing challengers in various towns.
Although kind of bizarre, I found it somewhat addictive. Final Lap Twin is not a total loss, but it’s still weak by racing standards.

Sega Dreamcast: Marvel Vs. Capcom
February 9th, 2009 by Sean R.
This 2D fighter for the Sega Dreamcast pits an odd assortment of Capcom favorites and Marvel superheroes.

On the Marvel side you have Spiderman, Captain America, Venom, War Machine, Hulk, Wolverine, and Gambit.
On the Capcom side, the motley crew includes Ryu, Zangief, Chun Li (Street Fighter 2), Captain Commando, Strider, Morrigan (Darkstalkers), and Mega Man.
Each player chooses two fighters in this tag team game, not including the additional “guest stars” you can call upon, and this game has every guest star except Charro! Read the rest of this entry…
Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3?
February 3rd, 2009 by Sean R.
Hey Recycled Gaming readers, I’m needing some help and advice on choosing either an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 game system. Read on.
Don’t worry, I’m not giving up on all my classic games or systems, but recently this was brought to my attention…
I have the opportunity to get my hands on a brand new black limited edition Xbox 360 (with HDMI and 120 GB hard drive) or a brand new Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) gaming console.
So here’s my dilemma: which one to choose? Xbox 360 or PS3?
Before you ask, the cost of the console is not a factor since I’ll be getting either system at no cost to me but I only get to pick one.
Let me know what system you would choose and/ or if you already personally own one and tell me why you like it or dislike the system.
Keep in mind that I don’t own any Blu-Ray movies, and don’t plan on buying any at this point, so Blu-Ray doesn’t matter to me.
I currently own over 400+ DVD’s, so right off the bat that makes me lean towards the Xbox 360 since I don’t want to repurchase all my movies. That would cost me a ton of cash.
I also don’t have any games for either system, however I do own a ton of PS1 and PS2 games (I play on my PS2), but not all PS3’s are backwards compatible.
So there you go, my modern day gaming dilemma in a nutshell.
Any comments, suggestions or advice would be great. Let the comments flow…
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos
January 28th, 2009 by Ryan B.
Wonderfully frustrating and dauntingly complex, Solstice for the NES is a 3D puzzle platformer that brings hours of fun as well as anguish.

You control Shadax the wizard who, for whatever reason, does not use magic. His girlfriend Princess Eleanor has been kidnapped by some mean-looking person named Morbius, who intends to steal her soul and become indescribably powerful.
To save Eleanor, Shadax is dropped into an incredible, multi-tiered maze you should want no part of. No chick is worth this.
However, Solstice is an impressive piece of work and great fun for anyone who enjoys a challenge and appreciates quality. Read the rest of this entry…
NES: Yoshi’s Cookie
January 27th, 2009 by Sean R.
Coming on the heels of the addictive puzzler Yoshi, Yoshi’s Cookie provides a completely different challenge.

This time you are presented with a grid of cookies of various shapes.
You rotate the rows and columns trying to create a complete row or column of the same cookie, which eliminates that row. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Genesis: Columns
January 24th, 2009 by Sean R.
In the late 1980’s Tetris was “the game”, and every reputable game console had to have a version. Not wanting to miss out on the puzzle-game frenzy, Sega introduced Columns, a Tetris clone with its own twist for the Genesis.

Columns of three gems descend from the top of the screen and you need to line up three or more of the same color to make them disappear.
Sadly you can’t turn the stack of colorful gems sideways, but you can rotate the order of the gems. Read the rest of this entry…
