Decision Made: Xbox 360 Elite Edition
February 4th, 2009 by Sean
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and feedback on which game console I should choose. I ended up going with the Xbox 360 Elite Edition.

Don’t worry Sony, I still love you LOL and I’ll be holding onto my PlayStation 2 system and of course all my PS1/PS2 games.
The major deciding factor in choosing the Xbox 360 over the PS3 was the Xbox Live Arcade, the hard drive size (120 GB) and not needing a Blu-Ray player.
At first I was concerned about not having built in wireless, but since you can add it with a USB dongle, that’s fine and if/when a new wireless technology comes out, all I have to do is get a new wireless adapter. No internal hardware changes required.
On the Xbox 360 game front, to get me started, I was given a brand new shiny copy of Shaun White Snowboarding (Target Limited Edition).
All I can say at this point is throwing snowballs at people is awesome
plus I love playing 1080 Snowboarding on my Nintendo 64, so I needed to get a snowboarding game for my new console.
Be sure to keep an eye out on Modern Classic Gaming for game reviews from classic games I’ll be playing from the Xbox Live Arcade.
Contact me off site if you want to exchange Xbox Live Gamertags.
Also, if you have any additional suggestions on what games I should pick up for the Xbox 360, let me know in the comments.
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos
January 28th, 2009 by Ryan B.
Wonderfully frustrating and dauntingly complex, Solstice for the NES is a 3D puzzle platformer that brings hours of fun as well as anguish.

You control Shadax the wizard who, for whatever reason, does not use magic. His girlfriend Princess Eleanor has been kidnapped by some mean-looking person named Morbius, who intends to steal her soul and become indescribably powerful.
To save Eleanor, Shadax is dropped into an incredible, multi-tiered maze you should want no part of. No chick is worth this.
However, Solstice is an impressive piece of work and great fun for anyone who enjoys a challenge and appreciates quality. Read the rest of this entry…
NES: Yoshi’s Cookie
January 27th, 2009 by Sean
Coming on the heels of the addictive puzzler Yoshi, Yoshi’s Cookie provides a completely different challenge.

This time you are presented with a grid of cookies of various shapes.
You rotate the rows and columns trying to create a complete row or column of the same cookie, which eliminates that row. Read the rest of this entry…
NES: Crystalis – Introduction Video
January 26th, 2009 by Sean
This weekend I picked up the game Crystalis developed by SNK (Shin Nihon Kikaku) per a friends suggestion since he knows that I like RPG’s.
Below is a video showing the introduction, title screen and some cut scenes for Crystalis on the Nintendo Entertainment System:
For those Modern Classic Gaming readers not familiar with this 1990 SNK classic game, here is the general background on this Nintendo classic:
Crystalis takes place in the year 2097, in a post-apocalyptic world, 100 years after a global thermonuclear war has reverted civilization to a primitive, medieval state where science is forgotten in favour of magic and fierce mutant creatures populate the scorched earth.
What little remains of humanity has built a weapon of mass destruction known as “The Tower”. The construction of this was aimed to prevent any more future cataclysms as its occupants have the power to rule or destroy the world.
To combat Draygon, good magicians have created four swords from each of the four elements, fire, water, wind and thunder.
If the swords are combined, they create a sword made from a fifth element, crystal. The sword is known as “Crystalis”.
When Draygon learned of the four swords, he took them for himself. The swords were too powerful to be destroyed so Draygon scattered them across the land.
Let me say this, I’m just starting to get into the game, and so far it’s pretty good. It reminds me a lot of The Legend Of Zelda and Final Fantasy.
Sometime soon I’ll have a complete game review up on the Modern Classic Gaming website for Crystalis once I get a little more time logged in with the game.
Sega Genesis: Columns
January 24th, 2009 by Sean
In the late 1980′s Tetris was “the game”, and every reputable game console had to have a version. Not wanting to miss out on the puzzle-game frenzy, Sega introduced Columns, a Tetris clone with its own twist for the Genesis.

Columns of three gems descend from the top of the screen and you need to line up three or more of the same color to make them disappear.
Sadly you can’t turn the stack of colorful gems sideways, but you can rotate the order of the gems. Read the rest of this entry…

The short answer, “of course we would love to get more games in our hands”.

NES: Caveman Games
January 19th, 2009 by Ryan B.
With its humorous visuals and competitive head-to-head action, Caveman Games has an intriguing premise but is aggravating to play.

Like a prehistoric version of Summer Games, Caveman Games by Data East contains six individual “sports” events that pit two cavemen against each other.
The action kicks off with the “clubbing” event, where two Neanderthal men beat the hell out of each other on an elevated stone platform.
The “Mate Toss” event is inspired by the Olympic hammer throw, but in this case you swing a cavewoman by the leg and hurl her for distance. Read the rest of this entry…
Nintendo 64: Command and Conquer
January 18th, 2009 by Sean
Command and Conquer is a real-time strategy game where you train soldiers, build structures, and ultimately conquer an enemy over a series of missions.

I really enjoyed this game on the Playstation, and found the N64 version to be even better.
The two main flaws with the Playstation version were its long load times and tiny, hard-to-make-out objects. Both have been addressed here. Read the rest of this entry…
