Atari 2600 (1977-1991)

October 7th, 2008 by Sean

Considered the grand father of video game consoles, the Atari 2600, originally the Atari VCS, was the first to significantly penetrate the home market.

Atari 2600 4-Switch Console

The system got off to a slow start upon its release in 1977, but its popularity soared with the release of faithful arcade translations like Space Invaders and Asteroids.

By the beginning of the 1980′s, the 2600 was a legitimate phenomenon, making Atari one of the most recognized brand names in the world.

The system offered several practical innovations, including removable cartridges, detachable controllers, different types of controllers, and the ability to select game “variations” from a single cartridge. Read the rest of this entry…

Retro Atari 2600 Content Coming Soon

August 15th, 2008 by Sean

I’ve got some really great retro gaming news to share with the Modern Classic Gaming community… in the coming days I’ll start to have all sorts of Atari 2600 console information, game reviews, hardware hacks, etc.

Thanks to a family member, a few local thrift stores, garage sales and my storage unit, I’ve blown the dust off a 100% working Atari 2600, complete with working joysticks, paddles and games.

Here’s a little sneak peak of the Atari 2600 game titles I’ll be playing and reviewing in the next few days:

I’ve got a ton more titles to play and review, however like I said, this is just a sneak peak post.

Before you ask, indeed actual Atari 2600 console system and cartridge pictures are coming soon as well.

Thanks for visiting and Keep Coming Back!!!

Sega Genesis II System Complete With Box

February 23rd, 2008 by Sean

This is so amazing and a first for Modern Classic Gaming. A Sega Genesis II System complete with box, instruction manual, power adapter, TV hookups, original Sega controller and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 game cartridge:

Sega Genesis II System

I took this system in for trade-in credits last night towards a Nintendo 64 (N64) system pack. All I can say is “wow” as this Sega Genesis II system is super clean, the manual looks like new and everything works 100%.

The box is a little rough, but it’s to be expected for a classic system like this. If you’re interested in purchasing this system for a really good deal, contact me.

Sega Genesis and Mega Drive Systems

February 19th, 2008 by Sean

Genesis 1The Genesis is a 16-bit home Video Game Console released in the US by Sega Enterprises in August of 1989. The system was designed in Japan as the “Mega Drive” and released in 1988.

It was primarily marketed as a higher power alternative to the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and competed initially with that and NEC’s new PC Engine.

The Genesis had far more to offer then the NES, including better graphics, better sound (in stereo, as opposed to the NES mono), and greater speed.

Genesis and MegaDrive cartridges are about four inches long, three inches high, and about 3/4″ deep. Exceptions to this are those released by Electronic Arts (“EA”), which are approximately 3×3″ square. Accolade cartridges are also approximately this size. Although narrower than standard Genesis cartridge size, they fit comfortably inside all versions of Genesis hardware. Read the rest of this entry…

Retro Duo: Nintendo NES and SNES Hybrid

February 13th, 2008 by Sean

For the people who don’t have the original console systems anymore, there’s a relativity new system out that was released earlier in the year to help you remember your old school gaming days: The Retro Duo.

Retro Duo

Basically the Retro Duo from Innex is a tiny console that accepts both NES and SNES cartridges. Rad dude!

The Retro Duo features S-video out as well as standard AV video (Red, White and yellow RCA) cables. The S-video only works on the SNES games since S-video wasn’t around when the original Nintendo came out.

The Retro Duo’s controller looks and feels like the stock Super Nintendo controllers which is pretty cool, however I prefer the original SNES controllers that also work with this system. Read the rest of this entry…
