NES – Adventures Of Lolo
January 6th, 2009 by Sean
This charming little NES game titled Adventures Of Lolo challenges you to solve increasingly complex puzzles in a series of castle rooms.

In this classic game developed by HAL Laboratory, you control Lolo, a cute little blue ball with two big eyes.
Each screen-sized stage requires quick reflexes and thoughtful strategy as you slide blocks, avoid monsters, and use power-ups to open the single chest in each room.
You can the view the layout of each room before each stage, and you’ll want to use this opportunity to formulate your strategy. Read the rest of this entry…
Giant NES Controller Coffee Table
January 2nd, 2009 by Sean
The other day I posted about the giant Atari 2600 controller and now I present to you a giant working NES controller that also doubles as a coffee table:

Here’s a picture of this classic Nintendo controller with the glass top on it:

For just a little more of retro gaming win, take a look at the video of the controller actually working while playing Super Mario Bros. 3:
This piece of classic gaming history was created by Kyle Downes, a 21 year old motion graphics designer from Melbourne, Australia.
Encase you want to find out more and see how Kyle created this 8-bit classic Nintendo controller, visit his blog post on how he made it.
I’ve been talking with my friend Mikalae who is also really into classic gaming like me, and we’ve decided to build our own NES controller too.
Once our 8-bit NES controller project starts, I’ll be sure to document the entire thing just like Kyle did. This is going to be awesome!

December 28th, 2008 by Modern Classic Gaming
A few Modern Classic Gaming readers have emailed in asking about the results of our Nintendo trivia contest with a chance to win a boxed Nintendo Challenge Set.
Basically we have a winner and are waiting to hear back from them to get a picture and also what name they want displayed on the site.
Hopefully we will hear back soon but are giving them a few more days since a lot of people are not around because of the Christmas Holiday.
Side note, we already have a ton of classic game related prizes lined up for our next contest, which will be announced soon, so keep checking back.
What’s going to be really cool with the next retro gaming contest is we will have multiple prizes and winners, so more people can get into the action.

NES – Double Dragon
December 17th, 2008 by Sean
A ground-breaking arcade game, Double Dragon by Tradewest popularized the side-scrolling, beat-em-up genre.

On the NES however, its title is deceiving because only one person can play at a time, and that’s disappointing.
Otherwise Double Dragon is pretty solid fighter with graphics and music that are pretty faithful to the arcade.
In addition to fighting in the streets, you can also scale ladders and fight on buildings. Read the rest of this entry…

NES – Freedom Force
November 22nd, 2008 by Sean
Freedom Force is a light gun game that’s a cut above the rest. The gameplay is pretty simple and like something you’d see in an Arcade shooter like Area 51.

Your mission is to shoot terrorists that have taken over an airport. Fortunately, the terrorists all wear the same colored outfits, making them pretty easy to distinguish from the civilians.
Freedom Force features some nifty graphics. I love how the bad guys fall out of doors and windows when shot, and the tied-up hostages also look exceptional. Grenades and missiles can be fired at and shot down before touching you too. Read the rest of this entry…
NES – Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
November 21st, 2008 by Sean
Disney’s Adventures in the Magic Kingdom for the NES lets you freely explore a virtual Disney amusement park, with the rides represented by mini-games.

Wandering around the park should be fun, but why does it look so sparse? All of the different areas are represented like Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Liberty Square, but there’s minimal detail. Instead of paths and roads between areas, there’s just grass. Pretty lame.
Your goal is to collect silver keys hidden in the five attractions. Space Mountain is a simplistic first-person space shooter that demands quick reflexes, Autopia is a clumsy overhead racer, and Big Thunder lets you steer speeding mine-carts while trying to avoid dead-ends. The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean are the real highlights. These two addictive side-scrollers look great and control well. Read the rest of this entry…
