Classic Game Cartridge Care Tips

March 16th, 2009 by Sean R.

First off, congratulations on owning a piece of gaming history. I’ve put together some tips to help you care for your classic game cartridges.

Keep in mind that these classic game cartridges have been around for a while. Some are more than a quarter century old! Some might even be older then you :)

Over time, humidity, dirt, and improper storage practices can lead to oxidization of the contacts and prevent the game from working.

In most cases, the ravages of time can be reversed and a game can be restored to working condition through a simple cleaning procedure.

Something to note, even if you are not experiencing problems it is a good idea to clean your games occasionally, as preventative maintenance. Read the rest of this entry…

Nintendo 64: Command and Conquer

January 18th, 2009 by Sean R.

Command and Conquer is a real-time strategy game where you train soldiers, build structures, and ultimately conquer an enemy over a series of missions.

N64 Command and Conquer

I really enjoyed this game on the Playstation, and found the N64 version to be even better.

The two main flaws with the Playstation version were its long load times and tiny, hard-to-make-out objects. Both have been addressed here. Read the rest of this entry…

Giant NES Controller Coffee Table

January 2nd, 2009 by Sean R.

The other day I posted about the giant Atari 2600 controller and now I present to you a giant working NES controller that also doubles as a coffee table:

Here’s a picture of this classic Nintendo controller with the glass top on it:

For just a little more of retro gaming win, take a look at the video of the controller actually working while playing Super Mario Bros. 3:

This piece of classic gaming history was created by Kyle Downes, a 21 year old motion graphics designer from Melbourne, Australia.

Encase you want to find out more and see how Kyle created this 8-bit classic Nintendo controller, visit his blog post on how he made it.

I’ve been talking with my friend Mikalae who is also really into classic gaming like me, and we’ve decided to build our own NES controller too.

Once our 8-bit NES controller project starts, I’ll be sure to document the entire thing just like Kyle did. This is going to be awesome!

Zelda Ocarina Of Time Cartridge Trivia

December 30th, 2008 by Sean R.

As most of my friends know, I’m an avid collector of classic games and retro gaming systems, which is why Recycled Gaming came to be.

So with being a collector, over the years I’ve learned some pretty cool gaming trivia and this evening I wanted to share a little bit of that knowledge.

Tonight, I’ll be sharing some cool trivia about The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time game cartridge for the Nintendo 64.

N64 Zelda Manual and Cartridge

A lot of gaming companies, like Nintendo for example, release various versions of game software. Some with bug fixes or removing elements of the game.

Below is what I’ve come to learn about the N64 version of “The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time” cartridge. Read the rest of this entry…

Nintendo 64: Blast Corps

December 26th, 2008 by Sean R.

When it comes to guys, there’s only one thing we like better than building stuff, and that’s blowing stuff up!

N64 Blast Corps

Thank goodness Blast Corps for the N64 gives us guys an outlet for our primal urge to unleash destruction and mayhem.

Each stage begins with a large truck carrying explosive materials slowly crawling up the screen. If it touches anything, it’s game over, so you must obliterate all obstacles standing in its way. Read the rest of this entry…

Christmas Holiday-Themed Games

December 9th, 2008 by Sean R.

Christmas is just around the corner. Winter is starting to set in, it’s getting colder which is perfect “stay inside” gaming weather.

I thought it would be fun to mention a couple Recycled Gaming favorites that have that special “Christmas holiday vibe” to them. Read on my friends.

First up Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64:

Diddy Kong Racing

So why Diddy Kong Racing? I know it’s not a Christmas game per se, but Diddy Kong Racing’s Snowflake Mountain tracks have an undeniable Christmas theme. There are lighted Christmas trees all over the snow-covered landscape and giant candy canes marking the finish line.

The best track is the Frosty Village. Set at night, the windows and streetlamps cast a warm yellow glow on the snow. Best of all, the excellent music is clearly derived from the song Winter Wonderland.

If you’re looking for something to play this Christmas but don’t have any Christmas games, Diddy Kong Racing will do the trick.

Next up, Batman Returns for the Super Nintendo:

Super Nintendo: Batman Returns

Yes, I know Batman Returns may seem like an oddball game to mention as a holiday-themed game but it clearly takes place during the holidays.

There’s snow on the ground, huge lighted Christmas trees, and holiday displays in department store windows. Heck, even the clown villains emerge from a giant Christmas present.

So now it’s your turn. Can you think of any classic retro video games that have a holiday-theme?

Don’t take the easy road and pick something like Toy Commander Christmas Surprise for the Sega Dreamcast. Try to mention something that isn’t obvious just by the game title alone.

Nintendo 64: Beetle Adventure Racing

November 14th, 2008 by Sean R.

Fantastic tracks and plenty of surprises push this excellent Nintendo 64 racer by Electronic Arts to the top of the heap!

Beetle Adventure Racing’s six tracks are not only loaded with power-ups and shortcuts, but the inventive track designs offer beautiful scenery and ample opportunities to catch “big air”.

Certain sequences will catch you off-guard, like when a T-Rex leans over a wall and tries to eat your car in the Jurassic Park-inspired track!

Beetle Adventure Racing GamePlay

The cars are limited to Volkswagen VW Beetles (duh) and the music is less than spectacular, but the races are thrilling.

There’s also a four-player “capture the flag” game variation is included, but I would have preferred a four-player racing mode.

Even so, arcade-minded gamers can’t go wrong with Beetle Adventure Racing.

If you don’t own the game, doing a quick check, the eBay 90-day average price is less then $4.00 USD, so it’s a real bargain if you want to pick it up.

Nintendo 64: GoldenEye 007

October 11th, 2008 by Sean R.

As one of the first console games to offer quality multi-player first-person shooting action, GoldenEye is probably the most celebrated title for the N64.

GoldenEye 007 Box Art

For fans of multiplayer mayhem, GoldenEye delivers a slew of options to customize every aspect of the intense split-screen battles.

The frame-rate remains smooth even with four players, and the controls seem tailor-made for the N64 controller. Read the rest of this entry…
