Wii – Animal Crossing: City Folk DLC Hub
March 22nd, 2009 by Sean
North American Animal Crossing fans finally have a place to check for upcoming DLC updates to City Folk.
Nintendo has opened an DLC hub site outlining downloadable content and game updates specifically for the NTSC region. A similar site is already available to Japanese gamers.
Currently, the hub lists a special “shamrock hat” (available until March 24) delivered to town via a letter with the attached item with special Spring content coming soon.
Let’s hope that the update also means that North American City Folk will get as much cool content as their Japanese counterparts.

Wii Supply Finally Meets Wii Demand
March 19th, 2009 by Sean
Video game retailer GameStop finally has enough Nintendo Wii consoles for everyone, and it only took around three and a quarter years to get there.

In an interview with Gamasutra, GameStop’s senior VP of merchandising Bob McKenzie says that the company’s supply of Nintendo Wii consoles has finally caught up with demand.
“You know, three years later, we finally have enough inventory on the shelf, and we’ve got a couple of weeks in supply of this. That’s good because we can finally determine and gauge it before we get into the fourth holiday season.”
This is good news for late adopters of the Nintendo Wii or people who didn’t want to pay high prices on sites like eBay or Craigslist.
The funny thing is last night I was at the local shopping mall and walked by a GameStop. They had a huge sign saying “We have Nintendo Wii In Stock”. I should have snapped a photo.
Let’s see how long it takes for them to meet Wii Fit demand

Sega’s HOTD: Overkill Sets Swearing Record
March 16th, 2009 by Sean
What best complements mowing down hordes of undead with high-caliber weaponry?

Apparently copious swears, if Sega’s House of the Dead: Overkill is any indication.
The recently released Nintendo Wii title now holds the record for “most swearing in a game” owing to its Tarantino-esque 189 instances of the word “fuck,” according to the Guinness World Records Gaming Edition.
“It is a dubious honour to receive such an accolade working in an industry where so often the fruits of your labours are derided and dismissed for being puerile or irresponsible, but in the case of The House of the Dead: Overkill a little puerility was the order of business,” said Overkill writer Jonathan Burroughs.
“Parodying the profane excess of grindhouse cinema was Headstrong Games’ objective and I am flattered that this record acknowledges that we not only rose to that challenge, but entirely exceeded it.”

EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis: John McEnroe
March 15th, 2009 by Sean
Electronic Arts is totally serious about including ill-tempered tennis legend John McEnroe in EA Sports’ upcoming Wii release, Grand Slam Tennis.

According to EA, McEnroe will be just one of several “all-time greats” in the upcoming title, which is expected to take to the court on June 16.
Hopefully EA will package more than just McEnroe’s likeness with the game.
I can’t think of a better use of the promised MotionPlus support than mirroring his juvenile antics on screen as we toss our Wii remote aside in disgust when calls don’t go our way.

Nintendo Wii: No More Heroes
March 14th, 2009 by Luke C.
No More Heroes is one of the rare M-rated games on the Wii. You play as Travis Touchdown, an anime geek who is slicing his way across the town of Santa Destroy and up the ranks of the top ten assassins with a beam katana (read: lightsaber) he bought from an online auction.

The story is arranged as a tournament. Travis must enter ranked battles, in which he will fight his way through hordes of henchmen to reach the next assassin in the rankings; defeat him or her and Travis will go up a rank himself.
Between ranking battles, Travis travels around Santa Destroy working odd jobs or attempting combat challenges in order to raise money to enter the next battle. While these can be pretty wacky, they don’t really add to the game. Read the rest of this entry…

Guitar Hero: Metallica Madness
March 13th, 2009 by Sean
Are you a Guitar Hero shredder? Or maybe drums are your thing… either way, if you’re ready to take on the competition and be among the first to play Guitar Hero: Metallica, here’s your chance.

According to the official Metallica fan club website:
Starting Wednesday, March 18, there will be a three day “Metallica Madness” tournament at the Best Buy store in Austin, TX during the South by Southwest Music Festival.
High scorers on each of the three days (one drummer and one guitarist plus a couple of runners up to make the “elite eight”) will then move on to compete Friday night at a special Guitar Hero: Metallica release party at Stubb’s, also in Austin, TX. Friday night’s shindig will include live music, a DJ, and we’ll be hangin’ there checking out your gameplay.
Too bad I’m nowhere near Austin, Texas because I would be all over this Guitar Hero tournament. At least I’ve pre-ordered my copy of Guitar Hero Metallica and will be shredding some metal guitar licks on March 29 when I get my copy.
If anyone reading this makes it to the competition next week, be sure to come back and comment on this post and let me know how it went.
Nintendo Wii price to rise for UK trade
March 11th, 2009 by Sean
Due to the recent depreciation of the pound, Nintendo claims it has no choice but to raise the trade price of the Wii in the U.K.

While the trade price only refers to the amount of money retailers pay Nintendo for each console, a large scale hike in that price almost guarantees that retailers will be forced to raise the rate at which they sell Wiis to consumers.
“We are only — reluctantly — raising our trade price now to retailers due to unprecedented and sustained depreciation of the pound. This is a problem brought about by extreme currency fluctuations that are a symptom of the global economic situation,” Nintendo said of the situation.

Guitar Hero Metallica Trailer
March 11th, 2009 by Sean
Ride the Lightning and join Metallica, the greatest metal band of all time, and musicians selected by the band including Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters and Queen in an all new Guitar Hero experience:
Guitar Hero Metallica’s set list is comprised of over 45 explosive metal and rock hits from Metallica and other legendary artists that are performed in venues reminiscent of the bands epic album covers, themes from their music and real world locales.
I’ve already pre-ordered my copy for Xbox 360 and will have it in hand on March 29, which is just about 2 weeks away now. I can’t wait to play this version of Guitar Hero.
Looking over the Guitar Hero Metallica pre-order box I was given to exchange out for the real deal on March 29, this release of Guitar Hero will consist mostly of songs from the band’s first five albums, with only eleven post-1991 tracks appearing. I’m totally ok with that. Early Metallica is some of the best music from the band in my humble opinion.
