Valkyria Chronicles DLC Coming in ‘Spring’
March 16th, 2009 by Sean
Though Valkyria Chronicles didn’t have the massive success it so richly deserved, Sega hopes to rekindle the embers of interest in the game by releasing three downloadable additions to the game “this spring.”

CVG’s official word from Sega offers a rundown of the three add-ons:
Hard EX Mode — fight your way once more through the entire Imperial army, where the enemies are more lethal and your main tank Edelweiss is unavailable. You’ll have to be more strategic in order to overcome your opponents.
Edy’s Mission “Enter the Edy Detachment” — six members have been separated from Squad 7 and on their journey to reunite with the squad, they stumble upon a tiny village under attack by the Imperial Army. Play as Edy and command your outnumbered team to defend the small village from annihilation.
Selvaria’s Mission “Behind Her Blue Flame” — this mission takes place right after the outbreak of Gallian battle lines and you play as Johann, a young and meek engineer, assigned to Selvaria’s troop. See the action as it unfolds behind enemy lines and see the war play out through the eyes of the enemy.
So far Sega has yet to confirm a release date (beyond the nebulous “this spring”) or a price point for the DLC.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Madness
March 13th, 2009 by Sean
Are you a Guitar Hero shredder? Or maybe drums are your thing… either way, if you’re ready to take on the competition and be among the first to play Guitar Hero: Metallica, here’s your chance.

According to the official Metallica fan club website:
Starting Wednesday, March 18, there will be a three day “Metallica Madness” tournament at the Best Buy store in Austin, TX during the South by Southwest Music Festival.
High scorers on each of the three days (one drummer and one guitarist plus a couple of runners up to make the “elite eight”) will then move on to compete Friday night at a special Guitar Hero: Metallica release party at Stubb’s, also in Austin, TX. Friday night’s shindig will include live music, a DJ, and we’ll be hangin’ there checking out your gameplay.
Too bad I’m nowhere near Austin, Texas because I would be all over this Guitar Hero tournament. At least I’ve pre-ordered my copy of Guitar Hero Metallica and will be shredding some metal guitar licks on March 29 when I get my copy.
If anyone reading this makes it to the competition next week, be sure to come back and comment on this post and let me know how it went.
EA Officially Announces Army of Two Sequel
March 12th, 2009 by Sean
After all the recent rumors, Electronic Arts has finally made the Army of Two sequel official: Army of Two: The 40th Day is coming this Winter.

The plot for the second entry in the series in summary:
A carefully orchestrated series of mysterious catastrophes is dragging Shanghai to the brink of ruin, and now the Army of Two must fight their way through ravaged city districts as they try to beat the odds and uncover the secret of the 40th Day.
Interestingly, EA’s announcement makes absolutely no mention of the return of the widely-mocked, but heavily promoted weapons customization feature from the first game. I truly hope they haven’t ditched the option to coat an AK-47 in platinum and diamonds — that was like “My Little Pony” with heavy phallic undertones.
The game is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and PSP platforms.

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard
March 12th, 2009 by Sean
Every once in awhile a game will come along that reminds you of a video game that you used to play when you were a kid.
Check out this awesome trailer for Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard:
After watching this trailer, the game looks promising and reminds me a lot of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem.
Matt Hazard was released for the Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 on February 27, 2009.

Guitar Hero Metallica Trailer
March 11th, 2009 by Sean
Ride the Lightning and join Metallica, the greatest metal band of all time, and musicians selected by the band including Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters and Queen in an all new Guitar Hero experience:
Guitar Hero Metallica’s set list is comprised of over 45 explosive metal and rock hits from Metallica and other legendary artists that are performed in venues reminiscent of the bands epic album covers, themes from their music and real world locales.
I’ve already pre-ordered my copy for Xbox 360 and will have it in hand on March 29, which is just about 2 weeks away now. I can’t wait to play this version of Guitar Hero.
Looking over the Guitar Hero Metallica pre-order box I was given to exchange out for the real deal on March 29, this release of Guitar Hero will consist mostly of songs from the band’s first five albums, with only eleven post-1991 tracks appearing. I’m totally ok with that. Early Metallica is some of the best music from the band in my humble opinion.
8 Guitar Hero Games Planned for 2009
March 6th, 2009 by Sean
I hope you like Guitar Hero, because if a claim made by Eurogamer proves true we’ll be seeing eight new games in Activision’s flagship rhythm series before the end of 2009.

Alongside the handheld Guitar Hero: Modern Hits and a separate, unnamed Nintendo DS release, Eurogamer says the company plans to release “Hard Rock Van Halen (August), Guitar Hero 5 (presumably a working title – September), DJ Hero (October), and Band Hero (November)” for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PS2 and Wii.
These are all in addition to Guitar Hero Metallica (March 29) which I’ve already pre-ordered and Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits.
While Activision has yet to officially confirm this rumor, the company is notorious for wringing every last bit of profitability out of its lucrative series. Eight releases in one year does seem like a lot, but it’s not entirely unthinkable given the dire financial straits facing the gaming industry.

Street Fighter IV: Free Training Manual
March 3rd, 2009 by Sean
In a particularly awesome bit of fan service, Capcom’s Street Fighter IV division has made available, free of charge, the Training Manual that the company mailed to members of the press to herald the new game.

Included in the 22 page .pdf file is an expanded look at each character’s background, full move lists, a short history of the series, and some stunning art that otherwise would have only been appreciated by the fraction of a percentile of gamers who had already acquired one of these booklets.
If you want to snag a copy of the manual, simply visit the Capcom Unity blog. So far Capcom has not mentioned any sort of limited availability on the file, but just to be safe I’d recommend getting your own copy before hundreds of thousands of other gamers are also inundating Capcom’s servers with download requests.
King of Fighters XII Coming in July
March 3rd, 2009 by Sean
The much-anticipated latest entry in the King of Fighters 2-D fighting series is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this July, according to information released by publisher Ignition Entertainment.

Unlike earlier King of Fighters games, KoFXII employs entirely redrawn, high-resolution sprites for each of its characters. Though this seemingly guarantees a smaller-than-normal roster, the game itself looks phenomenal.
Aside from promising the game will arrive in July, no official release date is offered by Ignition. The company does add that the just-released PS2 fighter King of Fighters ’98: Ultimate Match contains “footage and content of The King of Fighters XII” — just in case you simply can’t wait to see the game in action.
