Sega Dreamcast: Marvel Vs. Capcom
February 9th, 2009 by Sean
This 2D fighter for the Sega Dreamcast pits an odd assortment of Capcom favorites and Marvel superheroes.

On the Marvel side you have Spiderman, Captain America, Venom, War Machine, Hulk, Wolverine, and Gambit.
On the Capcom side, the motley crew includes Ryu, Zangief, Chun Li (Street Fighter 2), Captain Commando, Strider, Morrigan (Darkstalkers), and Mega Man.
Each player chooses two fighters in this tag team game, not including the additional “guest stars” you can call upon, and this game has every guest star except Charro! Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Genesis: Columns
January 24th, 2009 by Sean
In the late 1980′s Tetris was “the game”, and every reputable game console had to have a version. Not wanting to miss out on the puzzle-game frenzy, Sega introduced Columns, a Tetris clone with its own twist for the Genesis.

Columns of three gems descend from the top of the screen and you need to line up three or more of the same color to make them disappear.
Sadly you can’t turn the stack of colorful gems sideways, but you can rotate the order of the gems. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Dreamcast: Mr. Driller
January 17th, 2009 by Luke C.
Mr. Driller for the Dreamcast is a strange little puzzle game that has spawned a series of niche titles.

The first thing you’ll notice when you start up Mr. Driller is that the entire game looks like candy. The main character is dressed in baby blue and a pastel pink, and the blocks through which he drills wouldn’t look out of place in a pack of Starburst. The sound design has the same aesthetic as the visuals.
Don’t let the kiddy look confuse you, though. Mr. Driller is one the hardest, most unforgiving puzzlers out there. Every block you destroy could potentially set off a chain reaction of falling and disappearing blocks; it’s amusing when you’re on top of the falling blocks, but can be terrifying when you’re in the middle of the pile. Sega Dreamcast: Capcom Vs. SNK
January 15th, 2009 by Sean
Back in 2000, SEGA unleashed yet another fantastic 2D fighter: Capcom Vs. SNK which is just as good, if not better than Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

The 25+ characters are taken from Capcom’s Street Fighter series and SNK’s King of Fighters games.
The thing I like about this game is that all of the fighters are human, and the combat is mostly hand-to-hand. The Marvel Vs. Capcom games are flashy, but all the projectile, flying, and over-the-top attacks get to be a bit much. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Dreamcast: Power Stone
January 7th, 2009 by Sean
Games like Capcom’s Power Stone exemplify why hardcore gamers and retro game collectors love the Sega Dreamcast console so much.

Power Stone is a breath of fresh air in a tired 3D fighting genre, brimming with innovative ideas and wild arcade action.
It’s difficult to believe this was an early Dreamcast game, because few fighting games have surpassed it in terms of graphics and gameplay.
Power Stone pits two warriors in close-quartered environments like a factory, courtyard, or pirate ship.
The attractive battlegrounds are the ideal size so the characters can move around freely but not wander too far apart. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Dreamcast: Crazy Taxi 2
January 4th, 2009 by Sean
Crazy Taxi 2 for the Sega Dreamcast is a lot like the original game, only with new scenery and a couple other minor upgrades.

That’s fine for people who didn’t play the first game, but for Crazy Taxi veterans this is awfully familiar.
This time the action takes place in New York City, but except for less hills and the addition of a large bridge, the scenery really doesn’t look a whole lot different from the first game. Read the rest of this entry…
Sega Game Gear: Streets of Rage 2
December 29th, 2008 by Sean
The Genesis Streets of Rage 2 set a new standard for side-scrolling fighters, and this Sega Game Gear version is a surprisingly close adaptation.

You can choose between Axel, Blaze, and Skate, and the characters look almost identical in to those in the original game. Max the wrestler isn’t included, but you won’t miss his big slow ass anyway. Read the rest of this entry…
Genesis: Shinobi Return of the Ninja Master
December 20th, 2008 by Sean
Shinobi III for the Sega Genesis is one of the best ninja games I’ve ever played. The graphics, sound, and control are all spectacular.

The first stage is set in the wilderness, with ninjas hiding in the trees. It’s pretty cool, except for the guy walking around with the bucket on his head.
In the second stage, you fight armed guards in a high-tech, biological test facility. Read the rest of this entry…
