SNES: Mortal Kombat II

March 23rd, 2009 by Sean R.

Mortal Kombat II (MK2) is consider the best game of the trilogy, and this Super Nintendo version is far better than its Sega Genesis counterpart.

Mortal Kombat II

This time Nintendo relented and let the blood fly, and thank goodness for that! When I come home from work and pull some guy’s spine out, I want to see blood!

There are twelve fighters to choose from this time around, including some fine-looking babes and the ugliest dude you’ll ever see in a fighting game: Baraka.

The graphics on Mortal Kombat II are crisp and detailed, and the sound and voices have great bass. Nintendo did a fine job on the port.

My only problem with this game lies with the digitized photo of the programmer that pops up on the screen every now and then (”toa-sty!”). That’s just dumb!

Super Nintoaster Plays SNES Games

March 22nd, 2009 by Sean R.

If you prefer video game consoles that look like common kitchen appliances, I’ve got a special treat for you:

Super Nintoaster

This console project was built by BenHeck.com contributor Richard DaLuz (aka Vomitsaw). This thing is so cool, but sadly is doesn’t make toast anymore :)

For your inner technology geek, the whole project was fully documented complete with pictures.

Richard also put up a video on YouTube so you can see the thing in action playing Super Metroid.

Giant SNES Controller

January 25th, 2009 by Mik H.

From the makers of the giant Atari Joystick and NES Controller comes… the ginormous SNES Bone controller (for those with big hands), go ahead play some Chrono Trigger, better yet ActRaiser.

Giant Super Nintendo Controller

This thing is rad, but is it functional? Uh, well that’s debatable, however it’s really cool and worthy of a mention here on Recycled Gaming.

Just imagine playing a few rounds of Super Punch Out with this controller. You could totally punch the buttons. Knock out! Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Street Fighter 2

January 14th, 2009 by Sean R.

Street Fighter 2 revolutionized fighting video games when it hit the scene back in the early 1990’s.

Street Fighter 2

As a matter of fact, this was the main reason that so many people, including myself, ran out and purchased a Super Nintendo console.

Since this cartridge was nearly arcade-perfect and only available for the SNES, it spelled the beginning of the end of Sega’s console dominance.

The game’s eight diverse fighters hail from all over the world, and each has their own distinctive fighting style. Read the rest of this entry…

SNES: DKC3 – Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble

January 13th, 2009 by Sean R.

The last of the Super NES Donkey Kong Country games marks a solid entry, but the series appears to be running out of steam.

Donkey Kong Country 3

Sure the graphics look terrific and there are some minor new features, but we’ve played this game before.

In this installment of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country, Dixie Kong is joined by a new character named Kiddy Kong, a cute baby ape. Read the rest of this entry…

SNES: Gradius III

December 15th, 2008 by Sean R.

In the arcade, Gradius III was one of the most insanely difficult games you could ever encounter.

Gradius III

The SNES version of this side-scrolling space shooter is much easier, which is probably a good thing.

The key to the game is collecting pods to cash in for weapons and power-ups.

There’s quite a bit of strategy involved in selecting the proper power-up for the situation. Read the rest of this entry…

Christmas Holiday-Themed Games

December 9th, 2008 by Sean R.

Christmas is just around the corner. Winter is starting to set in, it’s getting colder which is perfect “stay inside” gaming weather.

I thought it would be fun to mention a couple Recycled Gaming favorites that have that special “Christmas holiday vibe” to them. Read on my friends.

First up Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64:

Diddy Kong Racing

So why Diddy Kong Racing? I know it’s not a Christmas game per se, but Diddy Kong Racing’s Snowflake Mountain tracks have an undeniable Christmas theme. There are lighted Christmas trees all over the snow-covered landscape and giant candy canes marking the finish line.

The best track is the Frosty Village. Set at night, the windows and streetlamps cast a warm yellow glow on the snow. Best of all, the excellent music is clearly derived from the song Winter Wonderland.

If you’re looking for something to play this Christmas but don’t have any Christmas games, Diddy Kong Racing will do the trick.

Next up, Batman Returns for the Super Nintendo:

Super Nintendo: Batman Returns

Yes, I know Batman Returns may seem like an oddball game to mention as a holiday-themed game but it clearly takes place during the holidays.

There’s snow on the ground, huge lighted Christmas trees, and holiday displays in department store windows. Heck, even the clown villains emerge from a giant Christmas present.

So now it’s your turn. Can you think of any classic retro video games that have a holiday-theme?

Don’t take the easy road and pick something like Toy Commander Christmas Surprise for the Sega Dreamcast. Try to mention something that isn’t obvious just by the game title alone.

SNES: Axelay

November 29th, 2008 by Sean R.

This vertical shooter was universally acclaimed upon its release, and it’s still just as fun to play today. In fact, Axelay may be the definitive shooter for the SNES.

Super Nintendo: Axelay

Its five lengthy stages alternate between vertical shooting and side-scrolling action, and most are set over planet surfaces although a few take place in deep space.

Axelay’s high-resolution graphics are stunning, with so many types of enemies that you rarely see the same one twice. Read the rest of this entry…
