SNES: DKC2 – Diddy’s Kong Quest

November 13th, 2008 by Sean

Capitalizing on the huge success of the first Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo released this excellent sequel featuring new characters, new areas to explore, different types of barrels, and the ability to purchase helpful items.

Donkey Kong Country 2

It’s basically the same as the first game with more of everything. This edition stars Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, a female whose long blonde hair looks like a big banana. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Disney’s Aladdin

October 26th, 2008 by Sean

This has got to be the best Disney game I’ve ever played on the Super Nintendo. Not only are its graphics absolutely beautiful, but Aladdin’s gameplay and controls are outstanding.

SNES: Disney's Aladdin

The game is loosely based on the movie’s storyline, with Aladdin’s adventures taking him through a market place, the Cave of Wonders, a pyramid, and finally, Jafar’s Palace.

Particularly in the “Genie” levels, the visuals are wonderfully imaginative and colorful. High-quality music plays throughout the levels, and you’ll instantly recognize it if you’ve seen the film. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Donkey Kong Country

October 19th, 2008 by Sean

A blockbuster hit from Rare, Donkey Kong Country literally changed the face of video games in 1994.

Donkey Kong Country

Although its gameplay borrows heavily from Super Mario Bros, its groundbreaking graphics and animation blew everything else out of the water.

Donkey Kong Country’s gameplay is strictly 2D, but its characters and backgrounds are rendered as textured 3D objects. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Scooby-Doo Mystery

October 3rd, 2008 by Sean

I’m really amazed by how well Scooby-Doo Mystery turned out. Not only does it look and sound just like the TV show, it even plays like the TV show.

Scooby-Doo Mystery Title Screen

You control Scooby and Shaggy who move together as a team while gathering clues, encountering monsters, and making sandwiches.

As you explore a pirate ship, carnival, or mansion (depending on the mystery), you’ll often run into your friends Thelma, Daphne, and Freddie. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Tetris and Dr. Mario

September 24th, 2008 by Sean

How many versions of Tetris can Nintendo release? That Russian guy must be a billionaire by now!

SNES: Tetris and Dr. Mario

I guess I really can’t blame Nintendo however, since these puzzle games are easy to program, fun to play, and people just can’t get enough of them.

This cartridge offers two games, including a nice version of the original Tetris, with all the playing modes and settings you would ever want. The second game is called Dr. Mario. Read the rest of this entry…

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

September 16th, 2008 by Sean

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a amazing game for the Super Nintendo (SNES). It was the third Zelda game in the series made.

The game to this day, 16+ years later is still amazing and compared to the first Zelda it’s a major step up for sure.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

In my opinion, Zelda: A Link To The Past has some of the most impressive Graphics seen on the SNES.

To start off, areas are nicely designed and Link looks great. As you leave your uncle’s house in the beginning you’ll notice it begins raining. The raining effect is absolutely beautiful.

The gameplay is also awesome and has everything you would expect from Zelda. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Kirby’s Dream Course

June 2nd, 2008 by Sean

Coming from HAL and Nintendo, Kirby’s Dream Course is a Super Nintendo game that was released in America in 1994 and then 1995 in Europe.

Kirby's Dream Course

Though it’s coming from a familiar pink dude, this game is a very unique breed.

While many games can be considered evolved forms of past games, this Kirby game was its own exclusive style.

Imagine the world of Kirby colliding with that of mini-golf, and that is this game in a nutshell. Read the rest of this entry…

Super Nintendo: Mr. Do!

March 27th, 2008 by Sean

Like most normal people, I’ve always been terrified of clowns. The main character in Mr. Do is a clown, and on the box cover he looks like one of those evil clowns that hide under your bed with a knife!

SNES Mr. Do! Box

After summoning enough courage to review this game, I found Mr. Do to be pretty good after all.

This game originally appeared in 1982 as a fast-moving Dig Dug clone. To its credit, it does have some original elements.

Instead of inflating monsters, you destroy them with a magic ball that bounces around the maze until it hits something.

SNES Mr. Do!

Instead of having to eliminate all of the monsters, stages are cleared by collecting all of the fruit, giving the game a Pac-man flavor.

Mr. Do’s graphics are colorful and vibrant, but I could barely tolerate its circus-style music. A fun head-to-head two player mode is also included.

Just be sure not to leave this game on overnight, or the clown could potentially escape from the television screen and kill you in your sleep. That’s just common sense.
