Sega: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

February 11th, 2009 by Sean

As most of the Modern Classic Gaming readers know, about a week ago I acquired an Xbox 360 Elite Edition.

Well apparently on February 10, 2009 (in North America) the nice folks at Sega released “Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection” for the Xbox 360.

Have a look at this official Sega trailer for more details:

I’m all about playing classic and retro games, so this release of 40+ games is just freaking amazing! The classic 2D style never looked so good!

All the favorites are here including Sonic The Hedgehog, four titles from the Phantasy Star series, as well as three titles from the Streets of Rage series.

Also included in the collection as unlockables are arcade favorites such as Congo Bongo, Altered Beast and Zaxxon just to name a few.

Each of the game titles have been converted to Hi-Def (720p) and will be a blast to play on my Xbox 360 (it’s being released on PlayStation 3 too).

For those of you who are not in North America and want to get your hands on this Sega DVD full of win, here are the official release dates:

As an added bonus, you can unlock additional arcade games and interviews with the original game developers as you earn Achievements on the Xbox 360 and Trophies on the PlayStation 3.

All I can say is for around $30.00 USD, this is probably one of the best retro gaming compilations currently available for the Xbox 360.

I’ll have my copy in hand on Friday February 13, 2009 (thanks Amazon). Needless to say, I’ll be busy doing some Retro Gaming this weekend :)

If you are interested in the complete list of classic Sega titles included on this DVD, here is the giant list: Read the rest of this entry…

NES: Crystalis – Introduction Video

January 26th, 2009 by Sean

This weekend I picked up the game Crystalis developed by SNK (Shin Nihon Kikaku) per a friends suggestion since he knows that I like RPG’s.

Below is a video showing the introduction, title screen and some cut scenes for Crystalis on the Nintendo Entertainment System:

For those Modern Classic Gaming readers not familiar with this 1990 SNK classic game, here is the general background on this Nintendo classic:

Crystalis takes place in the year 2097, in a post-apocalyptic world, 100 years after a global thermonuclear war has reverted civilization to a primitive, medieval state where science is forgotten in favour of magic and fierce mutant creatures populate the scorched earth.

What little remains of humanity has built a weapon of mass destruction known as “The Tower”. The construction of this was aimed to prevent any more future cataclysms as its occupants have the power to rule or destroy the world.

To combat Draygon, good magicians have created four swords from each of the four elements, fire, water, wind and thunder.

If the swords are combined, they create a sword made from a fifth element, crystal. The sword is known as “Crystalis”.

When Draygon learned of the four swords, he took them for himself. The swords were too powerful to be destroyed so Draygon scattered them across the land.

Let me say this, I’m just starting to get into the game, and so far it’s pretty good. It reminds me a lot of The Legend Of Zelda and Final Fantasy.

Sometime soon I’ll have a complete game review up on the Modern Classic Gaming website for Crystalis once I get a little more time logged in with the game.

Homer Simpson vs. Nintendo’s Mario

January 22nd, 2009 by Sean

What do you get when you mix a Simpson’s episode with one of my favorite classic 8-bit Nintendo games? Watch the below video to find out:

I love it when TV shows mix in a little classic gaming with humor. I think Homer Simpson makes a pretty convincing Donkey Kong. What do you think?

Giant NES Controller Coffee Table

January 2nd, 2009 by Sean

The other day I posted about the giant Atari 2600 controller and now I present to you a giant working NES controller that also doubles as a coffee table:

Here’s a picture of this classic Nintendo controller with the glass top on it:

For just a little more of retro gaming win, take a look at the video of the controller actually working while playing Super Mario Bros. 3:

This piece of classic gaming history was created by Kyle Downes, a 21 year old motion graphics designer from Melbourne, Australia.

Encase you want to find out more and see how Kyle created this 8-bit classic Nintendo controller, visit his blog post on how he made it.

I’ve been talking with my friend Mikalae who is also really into classic gaming like me, and we’ve decided to build our own NES controller too.

Once our 8-bit NES controller project starts, I’ll be sure to document the entire thing just like Kyle did. This is going to be awesome!

Mario Theme Played with RC Car and Bottles

November 27th, 2008 by Sean

In the video below, we get to experience two of my favorite things in life, Radio Controlled cars and retro game music mashed together:

I wonder how long it took to put the classic Nintendo Mario Bros. theme together with bottles?

I’m also not sure if this real or fake. You be the judge. Either way it’s cool.

Classic NES Series TV Commercial

November 18th, 2008 by Sean

Check out this totally retro TV advertisement for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Edition:

I completely forgot this ad had music from the synth pop group Yaz. The song is called “Situation” off their 1982 album “Upstairs At Eric’s”.

There was a time when you couldn’t step into a dance club or a roller skating rink without hearing at least part of this song booming over the sound system.

Anyway, back to playing some retro games on my Game Boy Advance SP NES Edition.

Game Boy: Revenge of the ‘Gator

November 11th, 2008 by Sean

Revenge of the ‘Gator, known in Japan as Pinball: 66 Hiki no Wani Daikoushin is a pinball game with an alligator motif. HAL Laboratory developed and published this pinball masterpiece in 1989.

The general concept of Revenge of the ‘Gator is to score as many points as possible without having your pinball eaten by the gator as seen in this video:

There is one table, and 3 bonus areas that are accessed by knocking down specific targets in the main playing area.

There are several modes of play. First, there is the standard single player game. Second, there is a two-player alternating mode. Finally, there is a linked mode for two simultaneous players.

Revenge of the ‘Gator is a brilliant pinball game – so brilliant, in fact, that I found myself tilting my Nintendo Game Boy around to try and influence the movement of the ball!

This game is very addictive, and finding all the secret bonuses takes some doing but don’t worry, time just fly’s by when you play Revenge of the ‘Gator.

If you’re after and original and unusual Game boy game which will keep you occupied for weeks, you will love this game.

It’s pretty cheap too. Just do a little searching around local used game stores, eBay or craigslist. I found my copy for less then $5.00 USD.

GameCube: Thirteen XIII

October 29th, 2008 by Sean

XIII or “Thirteen” for the Nintendo GameCube is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on a long-running French comic book of the same name.

GameCube: Thirteen XIII

The game definitely plays up its comic book roots, complete with readable sound effects and comic-book-like panels that pop up while you’re playing.

As a secret agent with complete amnesia, players unravel clues behind their true identity, while uncovering sinister plots against themselves, the U.S. government, and a mysterious presidential assassination.

XIII gas pretty good multiplayer action with up to four-player split-screen in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Hunt modes. Read the rest of this entry…
