Xbox 360 – XBLA: Smash TV

April 4th, 2009 by Luke C.

When people talk about how older games can be both a lot of fun and hair-pullingly difficult at the same time, this is the game they’re talking about.

Smash TV

In Smash TV, you and your partner play as contestants in a high-tech televised gladiatorial game show. If you’re really never seen or played the game before (and how did you manage that?) imagine The Running Man set in an enclosed arena. Read the rest of this entry…

GameStop Mission – Guitar Hero: Metallica

March 30th, 2009 by Sean

So early Sunday morning (March 29) I picked up my pre-ordered copy of Guitar Hero: Metallica from my local GameStop.

Guitar Hero: Metallica

My friend Mik came over early, we headed out to the Game Stop to get in line since I’d be getting a free kick pedal for some double bass action and rumor had it that stores would have a very limited supply.

We arrive at GameStop and no one is waiting outside the store. We are first. After a few minutes, others show up, some even wearing Metallica shirts. It was like waiting for a Metallica concert.

After about 30-40 minutes, the management opens the doors and we rush into the store. I’m first to the cash register. They have two lines. I start to pay the balance for the game and hear the other cashier say to the guy next to me:

“Well you are lucky and getting only one of seven pedals we were shipped for the Guitar Hero Metallica pre-release…”

Hearing that I might not get a free kick pedal for pre-ordering, my heart skipped a beat and I quickly reply with:

“So that means I get one of six pedals right?”

The funny thing is at the exact moment, my cashier reaches into the box and pulls one out for me. Sweet! Thanks for looking out Ashley I’m thinking.

Apparently there was a total of 44 pre-orders done at my local GameStop and they only received 7 kick pedals. That’s just crazy. There are going to be some pissed off Guitar Hero gamers that’s for sure.

Now having my new Guitar Hero Metallica in hand (and free kick pedal) for my Xbox 360, we head back to my house for some guitar solos and heavy hitting power chords capable of turning even the sturdiest fingers into tiny puddles of red goo. Heavy Metal at it’s finest!

Needless to say Mik and I played Guitar Hero Metallica for hours yesterday. It’s probably one of the best releases of Guitar Hero to date. Thanks Activision.

I’ll have a full review of the game in the coming days once I finish Riding the lightning and beating the game. So far it’s pretty awesome and even on easy, some of the older Metallica songs are pretty finger intensive, just ask Mik :)

Wolfenstein 3D: Possible PSN/XBLA Release

March 26th, 2009 by Sean

As we know, id Software put out a press release informing us that Wolfenstein 3D Classic is now available to download on your Apple iPhone and iPod Touch via the App store.

Wolfenstein 3D Classic

This new version of the game supports touch-based controls, as well as a tilt-based scheme, and a new top-down map that shows where you’ve been in each level.

It’s not all new, however, as the game features all 6 original episodes and the weapons we’ve all come to know and love, including Hitler. Wolfenstein 3D Classic will set you back $4.99 USD in the App store.

Classic Wolfenstein 3D isn’t done there, it would seem, as a rating for the game just popped up on the ESRB website. The game has been rated for the Xbox 360 and PS3, suggesting a future PSN and XBLA release.

Bug-Free ‘The Pitt’ Add-on Now Available

March 25th, 2009 by Sean

Bethesda has fixed the bugs in Fallout 3′s “The Pitt” downloadable content pack, and the add-on is once again on sale via the Xbox Live Marketplace for $10 USD.

The Pitt

The DLC’s planned release yesterday hit a snag when those who purchased the add-on found it to be buggy and non-functional.

Bethesda released a statement saying a “corrupted” version of the add-on had been accidentally placed on the Xbox Live Marketplace and that the developer would amend the problem as soon as possible.

If you did purchase the DLC yesterday, Bethesda asks that you delete the content you downloaded so as not to interfere with the new version.

Encase you were wondering, you won’t need to re-pay for the DLC, as your Xbox 360 can re-download any file as many times as you desire.

Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Now Gold

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is now content complete and has been shipped off for duplication, it was revealed this morning.

riddick-gun

The game is described by its creators Starbreeze Studios in conjunction with Tigon Studios and Universal Pictures:

“The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena features a brand new 11 hour chapter in the Riddick saga with six intense online multiplayer game modes including the unique and thrilling Pitch Black mode.

In addition to the full Assault on Dark Athena campaign, the disc includes a stunning HD remastering of celebrated title The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.”

If you can’t wait for the game’s April 7 launch (April 24 if you live outside of the US), there is a single-level demo available for download from the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Transformers Tune Coming to Guitar Hero

March 17th, 2009 by Sean

“The Touch,” the epic ballad that you will remember best from the soundtrack to 1986′s Transformers: The Movie is coming to Guitar Hero, according to the song’s creator Stan Bush.

Stan Bush wrote in a letter to Transformers fan site Seibertron.com:

“I’ve been holding off announcing this, but “The Touch” is going to be in Guitar Hero! Activision will be releasing it as a free download,”

The 1980′s were awesome, just like this song, which I actually have playing on my Apple iPod as I write this post.

Unfortunately, Bush could not provide a time frame for when the track might appear in-game but I’ll be on the lookout for it.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Madness

March 13th, 2009 by Sean

Are you a Guitar Hero shredder? Or maybe drums are your thing… either way, if you’re ready to take on the competition and be among the first to play Guitar Hero: Metallica, here’s your chance.

ghmetallica_mad_front

According to the official Metallica fan club website:

Starting Wednesday, March 18, there will be a three day “Metallica Madness” tournament at the Best Buy store in Austin, TX during the South by Southwest Music Festival.

High scorers on each of the three days (one drummer and one guitarist plus a couple of runners up to make the “elite eight”) will then move on to compete Friday night at a special Guitar Hero: Metallica release party at Stubb’s, also in Austin, TX. Friday night’s shindig will include live music, a DJ, and we’ll be hangin’ there checking out your gameplay.

Too bad I’m nowhere near Austin, Texas because I would be all over this Guitar Hero tournament. At least I’ve pre-ordered my copy of Guitar Hero Metallica and will be shredding some metal guitar licks on March 29 when I get my copy.

If anyone reading this makes it to the competition next week, be sure to come back and comment on this post and let me know how it went.

EA Officially Announces Army of Two Sequel

March 12th, 2009 by Sean

After all the recent rumors, Electronic Arts has finally made the Army of Two sequel official: Army of Two: The 40th Day is coming this Winter.

ea-armyoftwo2

The plot for the second entry in the series in summary:

A carefully orchestrated series of mysterious catastrophes is dragging Shanghai to the brink of ruin, and now the Army of Two must fight their way through ravaged city districts as they try to beat the odds and uncover the secret of the 40th Day.

Interestingly, EA’s announcement makes absolutely no mention of the return of the widely-mocked, but heavily promoted weapons customization feature from the first game. I truly hope they haven’t ditched the option to coat an AK-47 in platinum and diamonds — that was like “My Little Pony” with heavy phallic undertones.

The game is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and PSP platforms.
