NES – G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero

Developed in partnership by Taxan and Hasbro in 1990, G.I. Joe is a side scrolling action game for the 8-bit NES that really impressed me.

The gameplay in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero has a 2D platform feel, that’s similar to games like Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden.
You begin by assembling a team of characters, each with their own weapons and firepower, and you can switch between these characters on-the-fly.
Missions take you from exotic jungles to icy Antarctica, and each offers a unique challenge and a seemingly endless supply of adversaries.

GI Joe’s graphics are crisp and colorful, with detailed characters and huge bosses. The controls are dead-on, and the music is also exceptionally good.
As an added bonus, a password is issued for each level completed, so you can come back later and play again without loosing your place.
If you’re looking for some funtastic shoot-em-up action on your classic Nintendo Entertainment System, G.I. Joe is the whole package.
If you’re needing to pick up G.I. Joe, at the time of this post, it will run you about $15.00 USD based on eBay 90-day price averages, but it’s worth it.
All I remember about this game was how ridiculously hard it was. Of course, I think I was seven or eight when I tried to play it, so that may have something to do with my memories of it. It’s probably not fair to judge a game’s fun on my hazy memories from my single-digit years, but I still prefer Watching someone else play it to playing it myself.
@Luke: You should give G.I. Joe another try, seriously, it’s a lot of fun. I’m 99.9% sure your mind set is in a much better place for this type of game now verses when you were still eating paste and playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure
@Sean: Hey, you can’t prove I ever ate paste. Not you, not anyone. >=|
(are the Hello Kitty games that old? I wouldn’t know.)
@Luke: All seven or eight year old kids ate paste… it’s part of the child DNA.
As for the Hello Kitty games, the only two I’ve seen for the NES came out in the early 1990′s.
Why I mentioned “Hello Kitty Island Adventure” is because it was mentioned in the World of Warcraft South Park episode. It makes me laugh.
Man I remember these. There were like 3 of them and all very playable… I am still hooked on the figures LOL
Man, ANYTHING was playable when I was 7 or 8 and renting NES games like crazy. I remember sitting through hours of Sesame Street’s “The Count With Numbers” game and even some Little Mermaid crap that made me feel really weird.
