Nintendo Game Boy Micro

About a week ago, I stumbled across a Game Boy Micro at my local game shop. At first sight I had no idea what I was looking at. It seemed to be some kind of accessory until I flipped it over and saw the Nintendo logo next to “Game Boy Micro”. I also saw the slot that looked like it fit Game Boy Advance games. Sure enough, I plugged in an Advance game and it worked.

Not only did it work, but it looked amazing. The miniature size screen was bright and sharp. I was surprised that this tiny; almost toy-like handheld ran so well. Despite being quite beat up I purchased the silver and black Game Boy Micro. I have not been disappointed since.

Besides having a sharper and better lit screen than the full size Game Boy Advance or SP, the Micro also features an actual headphone jack. The volume controls are comfortably on the side, and by holding L you can use them to adjust the brightness of the backlight.

There are just a few downfalls that come with the Micro. The single speaker on the bottom right isn’t quite up to par with the Advance or SP speakers. A huge negative is the fact that you cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games.

If you ask me, the good far out ways the bad. I have already used my Game Boy Micro numerous places. It is the same size as my cell phone, and it fits perfectly into my pocket. I have revived many of my old Advance games, and have loved doing it. I can recommend this system to anyone who can get their hands on one.

@Brandon: The sole reason I haven’t picked up a Game Boy Micro myself is because as you mentioned, it won’t play Game Boy or Game Boy Color games which sucks since I still have a lot of GB and GBC games that get played.

I believe this is the first time Nintendo hasn’t made a Game Boy handheld 100% backwards compatible. I know the new upcoming DSi won’t play GB, GBC or GBA games but technically a DS isn’t a Game Boy.

I do have to admit, the Game Boy Micro screen does looks amazing. Good find by the way.

I’m with you on this one Sean. I too would have picked up a Micro but finding out that I can’t play GB or GBC games on it was a huge deal breaker for me.

Yeah I saw no reason to buy this one. I played with it and it was more novel then anything.

My pal got the limited edition Famicom, red and gold version and I really don’t think this was meant for the core gamer aside from that. I am pretty sure it was for a more casual market.

The screen is nice and sharp and it does fit in almost any pocket quite nicely. All they need is a cover so the screen doesn’t get scratched.

My thing is, I have plenty of good advance games to keep me busy. Its not like I sit down for hours and play. I have found the Micro very useful to just bust out and play undetected in class at college. It has saved me from quite a few boring lectures.
