NES: Mega Man 2

MegaMan II is the sequel to the mildly popular Mega Man 1. This game featured more bosses, larger stages, more abilities for the Blue Bomber, and the same evil mastermind, Dr. Wily.

Apparently Dr. Light/Right still hasn’t figured out how to get rid of his former assistant, so he sends Mega Man off to take him down. So, does Mega Man succeed this time, or does he end up on a permanent vacation?

Mega Man II Title Screen

Mega Man II is a lot better than in the first in the fact that it’s longer, has more bosses, more weapons, and the GutsDozer. We must not forget the Gigantic Shrimp-spewing Lantern Fish. Creepy cool if you ask me.

I don’t find anything wrong with this sequel to the original Mega Man. Whatever problems there were in the first one, they corrected in this one for sure.

The play control is still the best, and the music is great for an NES title.

However I do feel that some of the weapons are mediocre, like the Bubble lead, and after playing it a few times, it seems MegaMan 2 is a lot easier than the previous one.

The graphics are perfect. Mega Man is well animated for sure in this release. He even blinks, people! The major bosses are really big too! The GutsDozer rocks, as does the Fire Dragon and others.

Mega Man II

I love how there are different sounds for all the attacks, plus sounds for enemies and such. If you’re landing from a jump, then Mega Man makes a strange metallic ”Clank” sound. Which makes sense, since he is an android.

While playing this classic, you can’t forget to mention the music. It’s well written, memorable, and doesn’t get on your nerves! Good job, Mr. Music-Writing-Man!

As far as originality goes, Mega Man II is essentially, Mega Man revisited. There are more weapons and enemies, but Mega Man himself didn’t change, however the enemies are different and so are the the bosses and stages.

Play control is awesome in this version of Mega Man. The jumping is extremely tight, especially considering this is an earlier Nintendo game.

The shooting, although limited to 3 on the screen at a time, is still very easy to work with. Every aspect of this is great. You can do it, Mega Man!

Mega Man II Game Play

What I really like about MegaMan 2 is the game play. It keeps single players enticed, while the music and graphics can keep others entertained as well while they watch. I like it, you like it, we all like it.

If you are lucky enough to beat the game, you’ll see that the ending is about as cinematic as Nintendo is going to get, unless you start talking about the Ninja Gaiden games. This game wasn’t letter boxed, though.

Overall this is a great game. I mean, it’s not too hard and it’s not too easy. It’s just right in my opinion. The graphics are great, and the music is superb.

If you have the means, I highly recommend picking this game up at your local used game store if you don’t already own it.

I love Mega Man 2. My girlfriend and I played this game over the weekend. Since I’ve been reading your site, I dusted off my Nintendo too. Classic games are great. I do love my PS3 but there is nothing like a good game of Mega Man 2 or even Super Mario Bros 3.

@Eric: Thanks for your comment. Indeed Mega Man 2 is awesome. I think it’s the best one in the entire series for NES.

Mega Man is still my favorite series and while it’s hard to rank them, MM2 is definitely up there. I think it is a little easy, except for the damn wiley stages and that stupid dragon. MM1 is by far the hardest if you ask me, but that makes its replay value pretty good. Me and some friends still play through all the NES ones every now and then.

And while some of the weapons on MM2 were lame, the damn Metal Blade, which you could basically use all day if you wanted, more than made up for Bubble Lead! Man you could tear up every level with that thing.

Just today I was listening to a remix of Mega Man II music on the way to work. Damn, it’s great stuff. I agree that this is easily one of the best games in the whole franchise, but in terms of just the NES cannon (a whopping 6 titles, a record?), I’ve heard some people argue that Mega Man III is the best. Thoughts?

@Vinny: In my opinion, Mega Man 3 is where the series started heading downhill. The main reasons are the excessive slowdown and graphic break-up. I also personally feel the level designs don’t seem quite as fun or clever this time verses Mega Man 2.
