Sega: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

As most of the Modern Classic Gaming readers know, about a week ago I acquired an Xbox 360 Elite Edition.

Well apparently on February 10, 2009 (in North America) the nice folks at Sega released “Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection” for the Xbox 360.

Have a look at this official Sega trailer for more details:

I’m all about playing classic and retro games, so this release of 40+ games is just freaking amazing! The classic 2D style never looked so good!

All the favorites are here including Sonic The Hedgehog, four titles from the Phantasy Star series, as well as three titles from the Streets of Rage series.

Also included in the collection as unlockables are arcade favorites such as Congo Bongo, Altered Beast and Zaxxon just to name a few.

Each of the game titles have been converted to Hi-Def (720p) and will be a blast to play on my Xbox 360 (it’s being released on PlayStation 3 too).

For those of you who are not in North America and want to get your hands on this Sega DVD full of win, here are the official release dates:

As an added bonus, you can unlock additional arcade games and interviews with the original game developers as you earn Achievements on the Xbox 360 and Trophies on the PlayStation 3.

All I can say is for around $30.00 USD, this is probably one of the best retro gaming compilations currently available for the Xbox 360.

I’ll have my copy in hand on Friday February 13, 2009 (thanks Amazon). Needless to say, I’ll be busy doing some Retro Gaming this weekend :)

If you are interested in the complete list of classic Sega titles included on this DVD, here is the giant list:

I’d like to say “Thank you Sega” for this classic gaming release. I’m so looking forward to getting my hands on this ultimate Genesis collection of games.

If I didn’t own most of these games already I would say this would be a must buy… and maybe it is none the less, that $30 would go a long way toward preserving precious connectors and pins.

  2. Billy The Kid says:

Awesome! I’m so buying this collection. I can’t wait to play some of these games in hi-def. I’m looking forward to hearing more about it once you receive your copy.

  3. Retro Rob says:

This is really cool of Sega to put this out for the Xbox 360. I actually just ordered my copy and should have mine in a couple days. Thanks for the tip.

@Nathan: I also own a lot of these games, but this is one hell of a compilation and for less than $30.00 USD, you can’t go wrong. Plus being able to play the games on a modern TV and not have them look grainy is going to be wonderful. Most classics don’t look good on Hi-Def TV’s.

@Billy The Kid: Cool. Let me know when you get yours. Mine is out for delivery so I should have it in a few hours from now pending on how busy the delivery driver is today.

@Retro Rob: Good man. I’m sure you will enjoy this collection of classic games. I know that I’m really looking forward to playing some of them on my Xbox 360.

I’m considering buying this, but really the only game on the list that sounds interesting and that I don’t already have on the PS2 Sega collection is Beyond Oasis.

And Flicky? Do they really have to put that on every collection?

  6. Sean R. says:

@Luke: In my opinion it’s worth the $28.00 USD for this collection just for the unlockable coin-op arcade versions of Alien Syndrome, Altered Beast, Congo Bongo, Fantasy Zone, Shinobi, Space Harrier and Zaxxon.

As for Flicky, I’ve never played it but since it’s on the disc, I’ll give it a try.
